
Electives - Grades PK - 5
Art
Focuses on creativity and expression through various mediums like drawing, painting, sculpture, and digital art. Students learn about art techniques, art history, and the principles of design.
Music
Focuses on basic musical concepts like rhythm, melody, and simple instrument playing (like percussion or recorder). Students sing songs, learn to read basic music notes, and explore different types of music.
P. E.
Emphasizes movement, coordination, and basic fitness skills. Students participate in activities that develop motor skills, teamwork, and a love for physical activity, such as running, jumping, and playing simple games.
Spanish
Introduces basic Spanish vocabulary and phrases. Through games, songs, and interactive activities, students learn simple greetings, numbers, colors, and basic conversational skills in a fun and engaging way.
Electives - Middle School (6 - 8)
*Physical Education: Focuses on improving physical fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship through various sports, exercises, and games. Students learn the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle and develop skills in different physical activities.
*Spanish: Continues to develop Spanish language skills with a focus on vocabulary, grammar, and conversation. The course often includes cultural lessons to enhance language learning and encourage communication in Spanish.
*Art: Invites students to discover and develop their creativity through hands-on experiences with a wide range of artistic mediums. Students experiment with drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, collage, and mixed media as they explore the elements of art and principles of design. Students will also be introduced to art history, famous artists, and cultural art forms to inspire their own creations.
*Art - Stage Design: Allows students to become the visual storytellers behind the scenes of the SHCS Theater Company’s Annual Spring production. Through hands-on work in set design, prop creation, backdrops, and stage decoration, students learn how visual elements bring a theatrical performance to life.
*Media Team: Empowers students to document the story of our school community through a variety of media formats. Students will create and contribute to a school newspaper, digital magazine, television news segments, and podcasts, all focused on sharing events, achievements, and the everyday moments that make school life special.
*Outdoor Rec: Introduces the fundamentals of outdoor skills and activities while promoting safety, responsibility, and a love for nature. A variety of outdoor recreation topics including archery, camping basics, and fishing will be explored. Emphasis is placed on proper technique, equipment use, environmental stewardship, and outdoor ethics.
*Personal Fitness: Focuses on individual fitness goals, such as strength training, cardio, flexibility, and overall wellness. Students learn about personal health, exercise routines, and setting fitness goals.
*Speech & Debate: Focuses on public speaking, critical thinking, and persuasive communication skills in a fun and supportive environment. Students learn the foundations of effective speech writing, voice control, body language, and audience engagement. The debate portion introduces argument structure, research techniques, rebuttal strategies, and respectful discourse.
*Theater: Invites students to explore the exciting world of theater while preparing for the SHCS Theater Company’s annual Spring production. Students build confidence and stage presence as they study acting techniques, character development, voice projection, movement, and stage direction. Teamwork, creativity, and commitment are key components as students work together to bring a full-scale production to life.
